We also have our very own sensory room where our babies can enjoy calmer, more relaxed moments of learning.

A little about me...

My favourite animal is the Boxer dog because they are loving, playful, and full of personality. I’ve had five Boxers throughout my life, and my current furry friend is Jax.

What is one of the most important things you should know about us? That’s easy: our fabulous teams! Pure and simple.
Dedicated to being the best that a family could ask for, our team are constantly developing themselves through our training program run by childcare and EYFS experts.
It is not just our little ones who are the passionate lifelong learners here at Kindred! It’s all a testament to their love of what they do, and what makes Kindred the incredible, loving place that it is.

DAY IN THE LIFE

Day in the Life

Drop Off

Our doors open from 08:00, where you and your little one will be greeted by a member of our friendly team who will strive to ensure that the transition from home to nursery is a smooth and happy one. Wave ‘see you soon!’ to your child in the knowledge that they will be safe, well cared for and having endless amounts of fun as they settle in for the day ahead.

Breakfast

Our children start their day off correctly with a healthy range of options to choose from, such as cereals, fruit and toast for breakfast. For weaning babies at all mealtimes, a specially curated weaning menu is prepared by our trained chef and can be mashed, chopped or pureed depending on your child's individual needs.

Morning

We come together for circle time before beginning a morning filled with exciting opportunities for learning and discovery. Fuelled with a yummy breakfast, children enjoy a range of enrichment activities, adult-led learning linked to focus topics and child-led play experiences. From loose parts exploration and sensory activities to creative arts, imaginative role play and cosy reading corners, there is truly something for every child to enjoy. Outdoor play also forms an important part of the morning, allowing children to build confidence, develop physical skills and explore through active play. A healthy snack is available from 10:00 to keep everyone energised throughout their busy morning.

Lunch

From 11:30, we enjoy lunch, freshly prepared by our on-site chef. Mealtimes provide a wonderful opportunity to socialise with friends, develop independence and explore a variety of flavours and textures. Our seasonal menus offer plenty of choice and are carefully adapted to accommodate individual dietary requirements and preferences.

Nap Time

Following lunch, our younger children can enjoy a well-earned nap or quiet time. For our little sleepers, we create a calm and comforting atmosphere using soft lighting, soothing music and cosy bedding to support rest and relaxation. Children who are not sleeping can enjoy quiet indoor activities, stories and gentle play, helping to create a peaceful transition into the afternoon.

Afternoon

Children continue their learning journey through a balance of indoor and outdoor experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity and independence. Whether exploring open-ended resources, engaging in imaginative play or enjoying active time outdoors, every afternoon offers opportunities for discovery and development.

Snack

To keep little ones fuelled and ready for all the awe and wonder their days hold, we offer a healthy mid-afternoon snack, including fresh fruit and vegetables alongside other nutritious options. From 16:00, our children enjoy a delicious evening meal before settling into a relaxed period of child-led play, giving them time to unwind and enjoy activities of their own choosing.

Home

As the day draws to a close, children enjoy relaxed play with their friends before being collected throughout the evening. Families are kept up to date through Satchel during the day, and at collection time your child's key person will share highlights of their learning, achievements and wellbeing, along with any important information. Nursery closes at 18:00, when we wave our final goodbyes and wish everyone a safe journey home.

This is just an example day that the nursery follows, each day is subject to variation depending on activities and the needs of the children.

FAQs

FAQs

What is the unique feel or ethos of your nursery team?

At Kindred Shortlands, we are committed to creating a welcoming nursery community where every child feels valued. We are proud to have a diverse team that provides our children with a variety of positive role models. A special part of our nursery community is our chef, who has been preparing meals for children at Shortlands for over 20 years. She is a familiar face around the nursery and takes the time to get to know the children, sitting with them at mealtimes, supporting positive eating habits and encouraging them to try new foods.

How does your nursery engage with families and build a strong community?

We want our families to play an active role in nursery life and encourage them to join us for a variety of events throughout the year. We love seeing the enthusiasm of our parents who enjoy sharing their own experiences and traditions with the children. During Culture Day for example, families often share recipes, customs and traditions that are important to them, while some even volunteer their time to lead activities and experiences for the children creating a genuine sense of community and belonging throughout the nursery.

How often do the children play outside at the nursery?

Outdoor learning is an important part of everyday life at Kindred Shortlands. We aim to get children outdoors as much as possible throughout the day, with babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers typically enjoying outdoor play at least twice a day.

Does your nursery take the children out for trips in the local community?

Throughout the year, our children enjoy visits to the local library and short walks around the area. We also visit the local church to celebrate special seasonal occasions such as Harvest Festival and Christmas with our local community.
Older children may also take part in small-group outings, such as visiting local shops to purchase ingredients for cooking activities or posting letters they have written. These experiences help children build independence and real-world understanding in a safe and familiar way.

How do your settling-in sessions work?

You will join your child for their first settling-in session, allowing them to explore their new environment while you fill out the All About Me booklet helping us learn more about their routines, interests and individual needs. You’ll have the opportunity to spend time with the team and ask any questions you may have. This is usually followed by 1–3-hour independent session, depending on how settled your child feels.
Every child and family is different, so we keep our settling-in process flexible and will always work with families to adapt sessions where needed.

Reviews for Kindred Shortlands

Hear what our families think on daynurseries.co.uk, the UK's most trusted nursery directory with ratings based on reviews from verified parents.

“It takes a village but how do you start looking for one in a place you just moved to, with no family and friends? Kindred Shortlands was the answer for us. We chose to entrust our kids to them because of their warmth and dedication to the children. They have a wide range of activities where the kids could explore their interests. This is where my kids discovered their love for art and dancing. Most of all, my kids felt loved and as a Mum, seeing them happy and thriving is all I ever wanted.”

"I bring my granddaughter to Kindred 3 mornings a weeks she's always happy to go in which makes taking her there a pleasure. She is very fond of all of the teachers and has come on in leaps and bounds since starting there...The teachers all take time at the beginning of the day to find out how the child has been and again at the end of the session to let you know how they've been with them, making you feel like your child is their absolute priority."

"Kindred Shortlands is amazing... Their values aren't just words-they're reflected in everything they do, creating a nursery that feels like an extension of our family. The nursery is clean, creative, and inclusive. As parents, we're kept informed through the app, and family events like Culture Day create a real sense of community. They provide engaging activities that keep our little ones learning and having fun. Although my daughter isn't the best eater, I've seen (and tasted) the lovely range of food they provide."
